The 2026 Global IoT Coverage Checklist
A practical checklist for validating radio support, operator access, roaming, regulation, resilience and lifecycle obligations before an IoT deployment enters a new market.

A country on a coverage map is not enough to approve an IoT launch. Validate the production device, subscription, permitted operators, radio layers and legal terms market by market, then test the expected failure and recovery paths.
The GSMA Mobile IoT Deployment Map records announced LTE-M and NB-IoT commercial launches. Treat it as discovery material: confirm current service, bands, footprint and roaming access directly with the named operator and your connectivity provider.
1. Radio and device compatibility
- Which technologies are available at each real installation location: LTE-M, NB-IoT, LTE Cat-1/Cat-1 bis, 5G or a legacy layer?
- Does the production modem support the deployed bands and required features?
- Are module, device and local type approvals complete for the exact hardware revision?
- Does indoor, underground, moving or rural placement change the link budget?
- Are voice, SMS, positioning or power-saving features required, and does the selected network support them?

2. Subscription and operator access
- Which named networks may the SIM or active profile use in each country?
- Is access direct, roaming or provided through a local profile?
- Which network-selection or steering policy applies?
- Are LTE-M and NB-IoT available to roaming devices, rather than only domestic subscriptions?
- What happens when the preferred network is unavailable?
The GSMA notes that Mobile IoT roaming relies on inter-operator mobility, authentication and billing procedures and commercial roaming agreements. Review its Mobile IoT roaming overview, then obtain deployment-specific confirmation.
3. Roaming and regulation
- Do national rules or operator policies limit permanent roaming, imported SIMs or particular IoT services?
- Is a local profile, local entity, licensed provider or registration process required?
- Where may telemetry, identifiers and management data be processed or stored?
- Do sector rules apply to healthcare, payments, utilities, transport or critical infrastructure?
- Who will monitor rule changes and document the legal basis for deployment?
Requirements vary by jurisdiction and use case. A global platform claim is not legal clearance. Obtain current advice from the relevant regulator, operator and qualified counsel; do not infer permission from successful test registration.

4. Resilience and recovery
- How long does registration take after power-up, loss of signal or a border crossing?
- Does the application resume after a modem or profile change?
- Are retry logic and keep-alive settings suitable for constrained networks?
- What fallback exists if remote profile provisioning fails?
- Are private APN, VPN, DNS and firewall dependencies tested from every market?
- What monitoring separates radio, registration, IP-session and application failures?

5. Network lifecycle
- Are 2G or 3G shutdowns announced for any serving or fallback network?
- Is the expected device life longer than the remaining network life?
- Can firmware, profiles or hardware be changed in the field?
- Who owns migration testing, customer communication and replacement cost?

6. Commercial and support terms
- Are data allowances pooled by country, region or entire fleet?
- Which network, signaling, SMS, profile-management and platform fees apply?
- Are taxes, currency, minimum commitments and overage rules documented?
- Do support hours and escalation paths cover every operating time zone?
- Is any SLA tied to end-to-end device service, platform availability or only a provider component?
- Can usage, event and audit data be exported if the provider changes?
Approval record
For every country, record the approved hardware and firmware, named networks, access method, tested locations, regulatory owner, source date, commercial terms, fallback path and launch approver. Recheck time-sensitive facts before shipment.
