Requirements and use case

Document what each device measures, controls or transmits and who owns its operation.

Define target countries, site types, mobility patterns and expected deployment dates.

Set measurable requirements for availability, latency, payload delivery and recovery.

Estimate expected device life, production volume and replacement constraints.

Identify mains-powered, battery-powered and energy-harvesting device variants.

Record remote-command, voice, positioning and firmware-update requirements.

Coverage and technology selection

Map each deployment location to candidate operators and radio technologies.

Test signal quality at representative indoor, underground, rural and moving locations.

Compare LTE-M, NB-IoT, Cat-1 bis, LTE and 5G against mobility, power and throughput needs.

Confirm supported frequency bands for every device and destination market.

Check announced 2G and 3G sunsets and avoid dependencies that expire during device life.

Define fallback behavior when the preferred network or radio technology is unavailable.

Hardware and module

Select a module with required bands, technologies, interfaces and regional approvals.

Review antenna placement and tune the final enclosure, not only a development board.

Budget peak transmit current and test battery voltage drop under weak-signal conditions.

Validate modem firmware, host drivers and update paths before production lock.

Capture International Mobile Equipment Identity identifiers against device serial numbers.

Test temperature, vibration, ingress and electromagnetic conditions relevant to the use case.

SIM and eSIM strategy

Choose removable SIM, soldered MFF2, eSIM/eUICC or iSIM before final board layout.

Decide whether devices require one operator, roaming, multi-network access or local profiles.

Confirm remote SIM provisioning architecture and component interoperability where eSIM is used.

Define profile bootstrap, download, enable, disable, rollback and ownership processes.

Protect SIM inventory and map ICCIDs to devices, orders, customers and deployment locations.

Test network selection and recovery after loss of coverage or profile change.

Data and commercial model

Measure payload, protocol, keepalive, domain-name lookup and transport-security overhead.

Include retries, diagnostics, logs and firmware downloads in monthly data estimates.

Model median devices and high-usage outliers rather than relying only on an average.

Compare individual allowances, pooled data, pay-as-used and commitment structures.

Document activation, suspension, overage, roaming and private-routing charges.

Set usage alerts and define who investigates or suspends abnormal subscriptions.

Security and data routing

Create a device identity and credential lifecycle independent of the SIM identity.

Encrypt application traffic end to end and validate server certificates correctly.

Choose public or private APN routing based on exposure and enterprise integration needs.

Restrict inbound access and unnecessary device, modem and management interfaces.

Plan credential rotation, signed firmware, secure boot and vulnerability response.

Define retention, access control and audit requirements for location and usage data.

Regulatory and roaming

Verify radio, carrier, safety and sector approvals in each destination market.

Review permanent-roaming rules and operator policies for devices that remain abroad.

Determine whether local profiles, local entities or data residency controls are required.

Confirm lawful-intercept, emergency calling and number requirements where applicable.

Document import, recycling, battery and environmental obligations for device hardware.

Assign an owner to monitor regulatory and operator-policy changes throughout device life.

Testing and pilot

Pilot production-representative hardware, firmware, SIMs, antennas and back-end services.

Test across multiple operators, countries, radio conditions and mobility scenarios.

Simulate outages, denied registration, exhausted data, server failure and retry storms.

Measure current consumption through attach, transmit, idle, PSM and eDRX cycles.

Verify remote diagnostics and recovery without physical access to the device.

Set pilot acceptance criteria and record exceptions before authorizing scale-up.

Operations and lifecycle

Define activation, installation, suspension, transfer and retirement workflows.

Integrate connectivity events and usage data with support and asset-management systems.

Create dashboards and alerts for silent devices, unusual usage and repeated attach failures.

Assign escalation paths across device, application, connectivity and operator teams.

Maintain firmware, module, SIM profile and configuration version records per device.

Plan replacement stock, subscription cancellation and secure data erasure at end of life.
